A city trip around the Kathmandu Valley is an exciting odyssey back in time, culture and religion. At the centre of Nepal, this valley is a palimpsest in which beautiful structures tell complex stories that are as much about culture and history as they are exercise in purity of form. Beginning at the main drag in Kathmandu, where you’ll see old whore houses and local tour operators’ offices side by side to give visitors a hint of what was really once here with its temples which are said to be 800 years old. Closer up, the sacred Swayambhunath Stupa or Monkey Temple looms over the valley with an all-seeing eye of Buddha and panoramic views plus peaceful spirituality.
On the eastern side of the city, amid centuries-old shrines and religious cremation ghats on the banks of the Bagmati River, devotees assemble to pay their respects to Lord Shiva at the Pashupatinath Temple, the holiest Hindu temple in Nepal and the entire Hindu world. Additionally, the enormous white dome of the Boudhanath Stupa, the spiritual center of Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal, attracts tourists with its quiet environment and alive monk inscriptions.

Similar to this, Patan Durbar Square in the nearby town of Patan (Lalitpur) is a sight to behold, featuring an combination of stone Krishna temples, art galleries, and Newar architecture. Similar to this, Bhaktapur Durbar Square in the historic city of Bhaktapur takes you back to the Middle Ages with its famous 55-windowed palace, open courtyard, and classic pottery. Last but not least, the oldest Hindu temple in the valley is Changu Narayan Temple, which is situated atop a peaceful hill and features beautiful stone and wood carvings honoring Lord Vishnu.
Within a short driving distance of one another, a city tour of the Kathmandu Valley explores living history, sacred customs, and timeless beauty. It is more than just a sightseeing excursion.
